SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) links and British values

Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural links are firmly embedded at Glenfield Primary School across all curriculum areas. 

Here are some examples of how aspects of SMSC are included: 

  1. In English – identifying and describing a character’s feelings
  2.  In Music -  listening to music from a range of genres
  3. In Art – exploring the work of famous artists
  4.  In History – pupils explain why particular toys are special to them
  5.  In Geography –work on population and trade groups in South America
  6.  In RE – Hinduism – Karma: how our actions affect our own lives and those of others.

At Glenfield School, SMSC education is also fundamental to attitudes to learning and the different ways in which learning can take place.   We encourage pupils to work together to share ideas (as well as independently), to participate in debates, and to evaluate their own and each other’s work.  

British values are an important aspect of SMSC.

We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.  We ensure that partisan political views are not promoted in the teaching of any subject in the school and, where political issues are brought to the attention of the pupils, reasonable, practical steps are taken to offer a balanced presentation of opposing views.
