Curriculum Intent

At Glenfield Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire a love of learning, nurture curiosity and equip every child with the knowledge, skills and character they need to thrive—both now and in the future.

We believe that education should empower children academically, socially and emotionally. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced to ensure that all pupils, regardless of background or starting point, can achieve highly. It builds strong foundations in English and mathematics while offering a rich, broad and balanced experience across the full range of subjects.

At Glenfield Primary School, we aim to:

Our five curriculum principles shape all that we do:

Respect 

Respect is at the heart of our curriculum and underpins all aspects of school life. Through carefully planned learning, assemblies, discussions and wider experiences, pupils develop an understanding of the importance of treating themselves, others and the world around them with kindness, empathy and consideration. Children learn to value different viewpoints, cultures and beliefs, while developing positive relationships and responsible citizenship.  

 

Excellence 

Our curriculum encourages high expectations, ambitious learning and a commitment to helping every child achieve their full potential. Our inclusive approach ensures that all pupils, including those with SEND, EAL and disadvantaged backgrounds, are supported and challenged appropriately, enabling everyone to experience achievement and develop a lifelong aspiration for excellence. 

 

Agency  

Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, make informed choices and develop independence. They are given opportunities to reflect on their progress, set goals and take responsibility for their actions and achievements. Pupils are supported to develop confidence, resilience and self-belief, empowering them to become active and responsible participants in their learning and in the wider world. 

 

Communication 

Our curriculum is carefully planned to provide rich opportunities for pupils to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Children are encouraged to articulate their ideas, engage in meaningful discussions, work collaboratively and communicate confidently. A strong focus on vocabulary development enables pupils to express themselves clearly and deepen their understanding of the world around them.  

 

Healthy Lifestyles 

Helping pupils understand how to care for both their physical and mental health is essential for their future success. Through PE, PSHE, science and wider curriculum experiences, children develop knowledge and habits that support healthy eating, regular physical activity, sleep, hygiene and personal safety, alongside strategies for managing emotions, building resilience and maintaining positive relationships. Pupils are encouraged to make informed choices and understand how these can contribute to their overall wellbeing.  

 

 

Curriculum Implementation

At Glenfield Primary School, our curriculum is implemented through a consistent and carefully structured lesson design. Every lesson follows five key stages to ensure learning is secure, progressive and inclusive for all pupils.

The five stages — Reactivate → Teach, Facilitate & Model → Learning Together → Independent Practice → Reflection — represent the key elements of effective teaching and learning. However, the stages are not intended to be followed in a fixed or linear order. They are interchangeable and are used flexibly in response to the learning, the subject and the needs of the pupils.
